ABA Therapy services that are based on the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA) often begin with a comprehensive assessment to understand your child’s unique strengths and needs. These assessments guide treatment planning and help measure progress over time. Here are some commonly used assessments in ABA:
- Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA):
This assessment helps identify the “why” behind challenging behaviors. By understanding why a behavior is happening (e.g., to access an item, to delay a task), clinicians can develop more effective interventions.
- VB-MAPP (Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program):
The VB-MAPP assesses language and social skills based on the principles of verbal behavior. It helps identify areas of strength and targets for intervention in communication. The VB-MAPP also includes portions that allow clinicians to identify potential barriers to language development and readiness for a child to transition to a lesser restrictive therapy or learning environment.
- ABLLS-R (Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills-Revised):
The ABLLS-R is a comprehensive assessment that evaluates skills across various domains, including language, social interaction, self-help, and academic skills.
- AFLS (Assessment of Functional Living Skills):
The AFLS focuses on assessing and teaching essential life skills, such as dressing, toileting, meal preparation, and community participation.
- Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales:
The Vineland gathers information from parents or caregivers to assess adaptive behavior skills across domains like communication, daily living skills, and socialization. The Vineland is a standardized assessment.
- PEAK Relational Training System:
This assessment and curriculum focuses on helping kids learn how different things relate to each other, how to use those relationships to learn new things, and how to apply what they’ve learned in different situations. This can help with problem-solving, understanding language, and developing flexible thinking.
- EFL (Essential for Living):
The EFL is a functional assessment and curriculum that focuses on teaching essential life skills across various domains. It prioritizes skills that are critical for independence and quality of life, with an emphasis on individualization and person-centered planning.
These are just a few examples of assessments used in ABA! The specific assessments chosen will depend on your child’s individual needs and the goals of therapy.
A GentleCare Clinician’s Perspective:
What is your favorite assessment that you use and why do you like that assessment?
My favorite assessment to use is the VBMAPP for our younger clients . The assessment covers many domains of the child’s verbal behavior including social and play skills. My other favorite assessment to use is the PEAK assessment because it targets a wide age range and helps our clients develop language, problem-solving skills, build connections between different concepts. – Kezia P., BCBA
