Fraud Blocker Your Child was Just Screened for Autism. Now what?

How to Proceed After an Autism Screening

Your child received an autism screening, now what? After a screening for autism, you may be referred to a specialist who can further evaluate your child by scheduling an autism evaluation. This further evaluation is a more comprehensive assessment completed by a specialist to either confirm or rule out a diagnosis of autism.

Autism Diagnosis vs. Screening
Autism Diagnosis vs. Screening
Diagnostic evaluations for autism might include several different steps or processes, such as:
    • Review of your child’s medical and educational records
    • Physical examination
    • Behavioral observations of your child
    • Parent/guardian- or teacher-informed ratings for standardized assessment(s)
    • Standardized assessment(s) administered by specialist
    • Other medical or behavioral evaluations or tests

Multiple types of providers can diagnose autism, such as Developmental Pediatricians and Pediatric Neurologists. These professionals should possess a thorough understanding of developmental milestones, behavior patterns, and diagnostic criteria. They should also be adept at conducting comprehensive evaluations, including developmental history interviews and standardized assessments. Additionally, they should have knowledge of evidence-based interventions and support services for individuals with ASD.

Examples of providers who can diagnose autism are:

    • Developmental Pediatricians: Physicians specializing in child development and behavior.
    • Child Psychiatrists: Medical doctors trained in diagnosing and treating mental health disorders in children.
    • Clinical Psychologists: Professionals trained in psychological assessment and therapy.
    • Pediatric Neurologists: Physicians specializing in disorders of the nervous system in children
