Tech Tools for BCBAs: 5 Apps to Enhance Your ABA Practice

In today’s digital age, technology offers a wealth of resources to support effective and efficient ABA practice. Here are five apps designed to enhance teaching procedures and streamline your workflow:

  1. Choiceworks: This app helps individuals understand routines and schedules through visual supports. Create personalized schedules, use a visual timer, and even incorporate a “waiting board” to teach turn-taking and patience.
  2. Visual Timer: Visual timers can be incredibly helpful for transitions and task completion. This app offers various timer styles, including a digital clock, sand timer, and pie chart, to cater to different learning preferences.
  3. First-Then Visual Schedule: This app simplifies the creation of “First-Then” boards, a powerful visual tool to communicate expectations and reinforce task completion.
  4. Story Creator: Social stories are a valuable tool for teaching social skills and understanding expectations. This app allows you to create personalized social stories with images and text.
  5. Token Economy: Reinforcement systems are a cornerstone of ABA therapy. This app facilitates the implementation of token economies, allowing you to track points, rewards, and progress visually and engagingly.

These apps provide user-friendly tools to enhance your teaching strategies, improve communication, and increase efficiency in your ABA practice.

A GentleCare Clinician’s Perspective:

What is your favorite app to use with your clients during therapy sessions and why is it your favorite?

Some of my favorite apps to use with my clients are Touch Chat and Sounding Board, especially when working with students who have functional communication goals and are working on language development. I use these apps to model language throughout my sessions during both naturalistic teaching opportunities and instructional opportunities. I love these apps because they are free, easy to navigate and help promote language development! Another app I use often is the countdown timer. I use it as a visual timer to assist with smooth transitions between activities. I love this app because I am able to customize the visual timer and tailor it to my client’s preferences. – Kaylee R., RBT
